Sodium benzoate

Sodium bensoate is available in granulated form.

Sodium bensoate is the salt of benzoic acid, which exists naturally in many berries, as lingonberries, cranberries and others. Is produced when benzoic acid is allowed to react against sodium hydroxide. Benzoic acid in turn, is produced through oxidization of toluene (oil product).

Together with sorbates, it is the most common preservatives in food. Functions at its best in an acid environment, with a pH-value below 5.
